Today the Golden Fairy is celebrating her 4th birthday!
I’ll never forget that grey day in April in Copenhagen, when I started this wonderful journey.
Memories from the first day
I performed at Strøget in central Copenhagen. I had very little knowledge about street performance or living statues. I used a milkbox covered in gold fabric to stand on. My legs were shaking both because I was really nervous, and also excited.
I remember, that I didn’t know what to do with my eyes. at first, I tried to focus on a point across the square and stand really still. But my eyes kept getting teary from not blinking. So then I started winking and blowing kisses at people. I felt shy at first, and it all felt a bit messy, but also pretty nice.
After me standing there blowing kisses and winking at strangers for about an hour, a woman came over to told me that my skirt had come open over my crotch. Embarrassing. I thought: after an hour of people watching me and taking pictures, why was she the only person to say something?
Later that evening I sewed three strong buttons into the skirt and it hasn’t open in public since.
Four years later
After four years, today is a great day to reflect upon all the good things that have happened since that special day. There is a lot to be thankful for:
I have met so many wonderful people from all over the world including my husband, who I met at Edinburgh Fringe on my first fairy-tour out of Denmark. I have won two awards on international festivals performing as the fairy. I have made seven other fairytale characters. I started a little business in Denmark. I have been places I never thought I would go. And I have discovered how similar and nice people are across every continent. Everywhere in the world you’ll find friendly and curious people, who love to be enchanted, even if only for a moment.
The Golden Fairy has developed a lot during the years, but kept her sweetness. I think creating the fairy was the best decision in my life. Even when it felt silly and uncertain, I’m proud that I gave it a go, and so so happy for the opportunities I’ve had a long the way.
May all your dreams come true.
